Larry McCardel turns a Platter

How to Notes

Larry McCardel begins discussing "How to Make a Platter"

Larry mounts the blank on the lathe chuck so that the BOTTOM will be milled FIRST.

Larry shows the position of the tail stock to the wood piece.

Larry uses a compass to draw identification circles

With circles drawn, Larry can now begin turning the platter's bottom.

Larry begins to turn the BOTTOM of the platter first. The center of the platter is cut to accept the jaws of the chuck. This will hold the platter on the lathe in order to mill the TOP of the platter.

Larry continues to define the bottom of the platter.

Larry defines the bottom rim of the platter.

More rim "touching up".

Close up of the tool position when cutting the bottom rim.

Rechuck the platter to tool the top.

Larry's "Works of Art".......just breath-taking !
